19th Century Patent Medicines from Around New England
- Beth Payne
- Wednesday 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Before the passage of the 1906 US Food and Drugs Act "patent" medicines were unregulated, and often contained not only alcohol but perhaps some cocaine as well. Many of these concoctions, including Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and products from the Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company, were New England products. This program looks at the role of advertising for and the possible efficacy of some of these products.
Instructor bio: Beth Payne is the Museum Director at The Dudley Farm Museum in North Guilford. She has presented programs not only at the Museum, but also at local libraries.
